Interview: What Having A Strong Social Media Presence Means
Date: May 24, 2016
Meet Mike McGrail, a marketer, creator, speaker and lover of all things pixelated.
Many of his topics cover the world of digital marketing and how it should be applied to modern business, so we got the lowdown on his best social media tips for businesses.
With people going about their days at 100mph and stress encompassing most of our lives, we all need to create healthy daily habits so we’re constantly moving forwards and doing more of what we love.
Living a successful and happy life is one of Mike’s chief assets. Here’s how you can improve your business’s social media presence and define your own version of success.
One of your specialties is social media. What are some common mistakes you see businesses making online?
Despite social media having been a really prominent communications and marketing channel for close to 10 years, businesses still make the same mistakes – selling too hard, being too robotic, not having a clear aim for their social media use and not being responsive enough.
In the past three years, we’ve really seen the need for paid social media activity to be a part of a strategy – without that, it can be very hard to make an impact in improving an account’s presence.
Your talks ‘cut to the chase’. What do you want your audience to take away from your speeches?
I love to entertain the audience while ensuring I deliver practical advice that can be quickly implemented. I use real-life examples to paint a very clear picture.
For a business to grow its social media following, what are some ways they can do this?
The first thing to remember is that it’s not about creating a huge social media audience. A relevant audience is far more important.
In order to do that, a business must be human, reactive and proactive and deliver excellent content. Oh and don’t forgot the plan I mentioned earlier!
What does success mean to you?
On a personal level, success means always pushing myself to learn more and never believing I know it all!
As a Marketing Director at Administrate, what are your daily duties?
I drive the marketing strategy for the business.
We’re a high-growth software startup and that means our marketing has to be agile and drive quality leads, or that growth will stall.
We operate in every digital channel and I need to ensure they’re all worthwhile and working together. I also manage a team of four who all play a key part in our marketing output.
Do you have any speeches lined up for the future?
I joined Administrate in January this year and have been fully focused on that in the first half of 2016, however I’m looking to deliver more speeches in the remainder of the year as it’s something I really love.
One of my ambitions is to speak in the USA and as yet, I’ve not managed to make that happen!
What’s the secret to turning a hobby into a career?
Never stop believing that you can take something you love and make a career out of it!
What are some ways you stay motivated on a bad day?
You can learn a lot from bad days, so I try to look at them as exactly that – a learning opportunity! I also get outside and have a walk… the best way to clear the head!
If you are hoping to build your social media presence, then focus less on selling your services and more on providing helpful information and advice.
In the meantime, concentrate on setting goals that will help you in the long-term and lead to happiness, rather than just a financial benefit.
